제가 경험한 것들을 몇 가지 들려 드릴게요. 물을 따라 강의 흐름을 따라 흙을 들고 이동하는 욕망의 지형을 만들고 있습니다. 때는 올해 9월 10일. 시흥 시화호 거북섬으로 출몰하였습니다. 시화호는 다들 아시는 바와 같이 인공 호수입니다. 거북섬도 마찬가지로 인공섬입니다. 두 다리가 달린 동물은 끊임없이 새로운 지형을 만드는 데에 열을 올립니다. 그런데 인공호수 시화호는 근처 공장에서 불법으로 흘려보낸 오염수 때문에 죽음의 호수가 되었습니다. 이후에 정화운동을 하여 겨우 살려내어 천연기념물 철새들이 찾아오는 곳이 되었다는군요.

그 시화호에 인공섬인 거북섬이 만들어졌습니다. 거북이는 어떤 상징입니까. 장수와 지혜, 끈기를 상징하며 거북이가 알을 많이 낳으므로 재물과 번영을 불러온다고 하기도 하지요. 한국 사람들은 유독 부귀영화를 꿈꾸는 것 같습니다. 보름달이 뜨는 날 물을 받아놓고 빌고 또 빌었던 어르신들의 기운 속에서 피어난 한국인들의 기복신앙은 자체로 기본 설정값인지도 모르겠습니다.

거북섬은 정말로 부를 가져오기 위한 장치로 탄생했습니다. 저는 그날 거북이의 머리와 배, 다리를 순차적으로 밟았고 그의 배 위치에서 그의 흙을 채취하여 가져온 건축용 흙과 함께 섞어 흔적을 남기고 왔습니다. 사실은 그의 흙도 원래 그의 흙이 아닙니다. 출처를 알 수 없는 흙이 거북섬으로 만들어지기 위해 옮겨져 왔겠지요. 여러분은 어디에서 오셨습니까? 당신은 어떤 모습으로 만들어지기 위해 그곳에 터를 잡고 살고 있습니까?

I will tell you some of my experiences. I am making a terrain of desire that carries dirt and moves along the water, along the flow of the river. It was September 10th of this year. I appeared on Turtle Island in the Lake Sihwa in Siheung. As you all know, the Lake Sihwa is an artificial lake. The Turtle Island is, likewise, an artificial island. Animals with two legs are ceaselessly and eagerly creating a new terrain. However, the artificial lake Lake Sihwa became a dead lake because of the contaminated water illegally poured into from a nearby factory. Later, purification movements managed to revive the lake and now even endangered seasonal birds visit the lake. The artificial island of the Turtle Island was made in that Lake Sihwa. What kind of symbol is a turtle? It symbolizes longevity, wisdom, and perseverance, and because it lays many eggs, it is said to bring good luck and prosperity. It seems like Korean people especially dream of wealth and honor. The Korean people’s belief in seeking happiness and prosperity, which was born out of the old people praying over a clean water on a full moon, might be a standard for Koreans.

Turtle Island was indeed born as a device to bring wealth. On that day, I stepped on the head, stomach, and legs of the turtle, took some dirt from its stomach, and left a trace, using it and the dirt for construction that I brought. In fact, his dirt is not originally his dirt. Probably some dirt from somewhere must have been moved here to make Turtle Island. Where are you from? What are you going to become?

9월 14일에는 충청남도 부여로 갔습니다. 거북섬에서 채취한 흙과 기존 건축용 흙, 찹쌀가루가 섞인 혼종 흙을 들고 말입니다. 이 날은 비가 왔습니다. 부여 백마강을 관찰했습니다. 그리고 강을 사이로 두고 고운 고동색 흙이 있음을 발견했지요. 아, 저 곳이다. 내가 출몰할 곳은 바로 저 곳이구나. 작은 경차를 타고 고운 흙이 있는 곳에 도달했습니다. 그러다 그만 고운 흙에 빠져버리고 말았지요! 흙더미 속에 바퀴가 파묻혀 버렸습니다. 그 곳엔 왜 고운 흙이 그토록 많았던 걸까요. 백마강이 흐르고 있는, 물이 바로 옆에 있는 그 곳에 고운 흙이 쌓여 있는 것을 보며 누군가의 욕망이 이곳에 서려 있음을 느꼈습니다. 불과 며칠 전 홍수가 날지도 모를 정도로 간당간당했던 백마강이었는데 그 흙은 대체 어디에서 이동해 온 것일까요. 역시 출처를 알 수 없습니다. 건축을 새로 하기 위해 재료로 쓰기 위한 흙으로 그곳에 놓아져 있는지도 모르겠습니다. 저의 안내자는 혼종 흙을 풀었습니다. 그리고 그 곳의 고운 흙을 섞었습니다. 어느새 발효가 되어버린 흙은 시큼한 막걸리 향기가 났지만 괜찮아요. 그렇게 흙은 다른 모습으로 곤충의 먹이가 될 수도 있을테니까요.

부여에서의 출몰은 욕망을 표출하다, 점점 더 넓혀 가다가 결국 자기 안에 갇혀 버린 자신을 발견한 시간이었습니다. 갈 길은 물에 의해 소멸하는 길 밖에 없구나. 등장의 때가 있으면 퇴장의 때가 있습니다. 지역의 생성과 소멸도 자연스러운 것이 아닐까요. 나타나는 것만 이야기하지 말고 사라짐도 바라봐야 함을요.

On September 14, I went to Buyeo in Chungcheongnam-do. I carried the soil mixed of the soil from Turtle Island, soil for construction, and glutinous rice powder. It rained that day. I examined the Baeg-ma River in Buyeo. And I found soft maroon-colored soil between the rivers. Ah, there it is. This is where I should appear. Riding in a small car, I arrived at where the soft earth was. But then I fell into the soft soil. The wheels fell into the dirt. Why was there that much soft soil? As seeing the dirt mount right next to the water, the Baeg-ma River, I felt someone’s desire lingering there. Only a few days ago, the Baeg-ma River almost had a flood, then, where on earth did the soil come from? We cannot know. Perhaps it is to be used as material for a new building. My guide poured out mixed soil. And the guide added the soft dirt from that place. The already fermented soil smelled like sour rice wine, but it was okay. In this way, the soil can take on a different form and become food for insects.

While appearing at Buyeo, I expressed my desire, expanded it, and then finally, found myself trapped within myself. The only way to go forward is to disappear by water. The time for appearance is followed by the time for disappearance. Thus, the emergence and disappearance of a region is also natural. We should not only talk about appearance but also look at disappearance.

9월 25일에는 흙을 찾기 위해 서울역으로 갔습니다. 과연 서울역에는 흙이 있을까요? 흙이 모여있는, 아직 무언가가 만들어지지 않은 상태의 흙이 있다면 약간 흥분될 것 같았습니다. 서울역을 중심으로 근처를 돌아보았어요. 역시나 아스팔트가 깔끔하게 메꾸어져 있었지요. 시민들의 산책길로 탈바꿈한 공공재 서울로를 올라가 보았습니다. 그곳엔 흙이 있었습니다. 정확히 말하면, 식물을 위한 흙이었어요. 식물이 자라는 자리도 콘크리트로 화분을 만들어 식물의 삶터를 정해 놓았습니다. 그 흙을 가져갈 수는 없지요. 더 올라가 보았어요. ‘도킹 서울(Docking Seoul)’ 이라는 공공예술 프로젝트가 이루어진 곳이었지요. 저는 신기하게도 그곳에서 흙을 발견했습니다. 바닥에 몽돌이 가지런히 놓인 자리였는데 왠지 그곳에 흙이 있을 것 같다는 확신이 들었습니다. 약간 파헤쳐보니 몽돌 아래에 흙이 숨어 있었습니다. 콘크리트로 세운 건물 위에서 발견했네요. 사실상 공중에 떠 있는 흙이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 그 흙은 어디에서 왔을까요. 흙은 자신이 그곳에 머물게 될 것을 알았을까요.

On September 25, I went to Seoul Station to look for soil. Would there be soil at the station? I would be a little bit excited if there was some dirt, dirt in a state of not being made into anything. I looked around Seoul Station. It was all cleanly fed up with asphalt. I walked onto the Seoullo, the public goods that became a path for citizens. There was soil. More precisely, soil for plants. They have set the place for plants with a concrete flower pot. We can’t take soil from there. I went higher. A public art project called Docking Seoul took place there. Interestingly, I found soil there. It was a place with small, round stones on the ground and I was sure that there would be dirt. In fact, I thought it was dirt floating in the air. Where did the dirt come from? Did the dirt know that it was going to stay there?
